Maths tutors in Johannesburg, Cape Town and Pretoria or online
A maths tutor who understands your child can make a difficult subject feel approachable again. We offer one-on-one tuition from Grade 4 to matric and beyond, with a tutor chosen for your child’s needs, personality and syllabus.
Maths support that starts with your child
Perhaps homework has become a daily struggle, a recent report came as a surprise, or your child is working towards a distinction. We start by understanding what they need. An assessment helps us find gaps in the fundamentals, look at how they approach a problem and see where they lose marks. We review their schoolwork and, where useful, speak to their teachers before recommending a programme.
Every one of our maths tutors scored a distinction or higher for Mathematics at school, has studied a relevant field at university, passed our intake maths exam with distinction, and completed our tutor training programme with distinction. Our maths tutors know the work and how to teach it; our students frequently improve their marks by 20%.
An Education Leader, a senior member of our team who plans and oversees your child’s programme, works alongside the tutor. They supervise the teaching, keep in touch with the school and report back to your family. You have someone to speak to about how things are going, including the work between lessons.
Genius has been operating since 1993. We have delivered more than 250,000 hours of one-on-one tuition, supporting students in person and online.
Maths tutoring for each stage
The work changes as your child moves through school. We match the tutor and the programme to the stage they are at.
Grade 4 to 7
Number sense, fractions, decimals and word problems. We help children understand why a method works and practise using it, with time to ask questions and explain their thinking.
Grade 8 and 9
Algebra, equations and geometry build on earlier foundations. We work through gaps as they appear and help your child prepare for the demands of high school maths.
Grade 10 to 12, CAPS and IEB
Functions, trigonometry, geometry and calculus, with preparation for the papers your child will write. Lessons address understanding, written method and working under time pressure.
Cambridge and IB
Support for Cambridge IGCSE, AS and A-level Mathematics, and the IB maths courses. We match for syllabus and level, using the relevant past papers and marking guidelines.
Learn more →Further Studies Mathematics
For students taking maths beyond the national curriculum. We choose a tutor with the subject depth to help them work through more demanding ideas and problems.
University entrance and the NBT
Preparation for the National Benchmark Test in Mathematics alongside schoolwork. We plan around the test date and the student’s university application requirements.
Learn more →Understanding the work, and showing it in an exam
A student may understand an explanation in a lesson and still struggle to use it alone in a test. We look at both. That might mean revisiting an algebra rule before tackling functions, learning how to start a geometry proof, or practising how to show each step clearly enough to earn the method marks.
For students preparing for the 2026 CAPS matric exams, Mathematics Paper 1 covers algebra, equations, sequences, finance, functions, calculus and probability. Paper 2 covers statistics, analytical geometry, trigonometry and Euclidean geometry. We prepare for both, giving more attention to the areas your child finds difficult. For IEB students, lessons use the relevant IEB papers and marking guidelines.
We tutor Mathematical Literacy too. If your child is choosing subjects, our guide to Mathematics vs Mathematical Literacy explains the differences. We can help your family consider their current strengths and future plans, alongside the entry requirements of any courses they are considering.
For 2026, the IEB’s Further Studies Mathematics is the course formerly called Advanced Programme Mathematics. We also support Cambridge Mathematics and both IB Mathematics courses: Analysis and Approaches, and Applications and Interpretation.
Our approach
Assess
First, we assess the student to identify gaps in the fundamentals (what content don’t they know?) and common error types (how are they losing marks?).
Match
Then, we select a mentor from our team of Maths tutors. It is crucial for a student to ‘like’ their tutor and look forward to the lessons.
Teach
The trained tutor comes to the house for high-impact one-on-one lessons where they actually teach the ideas and concepts.
Practise
We set structured homework for the student to do in between lessons. When it comes to learning, practice is key.
Engage
We use projects, experiments, and practical demonstrations to excite the student and pique their interest.
Test
The student writes regular mock tests so that they can practise their skills under exam conditions, and we can monitor their progress and increase their confidence.
Refine technique
A student needs to familiarise themselves with the technical requirements of the memorandum in order to excel. We teach test-taking techniques.
Supervise
We supervise, guide and support the programme to ensure a great result.
At home or online, with the same personal attention
Our maths tutors teach in Johannesburg, Pretoria and Cape Town, including Cape Town’s suburbs and Stellenbosch and the Winelands. Tell us your area, your child’s grade and their syllabus so we can discuss a suitable arrangement.
Online maths lessons are live and one-on-one. The tutor and student can work through a problem on a shared screen, talking through each step. Your Education Leader oversees the programme just as they would for in-person tuition. It is an option for families elsewhere in South Africa or abroad, and for students who prefer to learn online.
