One-On-One IEB tutors in Johannesburg, Cape Town and Pretoria or online
An IEB student can know the subject and still lose marks through timing, technique or a misread question. We start by finding out where that is happening for your child. Then we match them with an IEB subject tutor from our own team, while a senior Education Leader plans and oversees the programme.
Why IEB families choose Genius
Families often contact us because they need help in one subject. We begin with the wider picture. We meet your family, assess your child’s knowledge and exam technique, review their academic record and, where useful, consult their teachers or other educational professionals. That gives us enough evidence to recommend the right form of support and choose a tutor who suits both the subject and the student.
Every tutor on our IEB team earned distinctions at school and in our intake exams. They have studied at university and completed our tutor training programme with distinction. An Education Leader works alongside the tutor: they design the programme, supervise the teaching, stay in contact with the school and report back to your family.
Our tutors know the IEB material and how to teach it; our students frequently improve their marks by 20%.
Genius has been operating since 1993. Across that time, we have delivered more than 250,000 hours of one-on-one tuition, including work with IEB students in Johannesburg, Pretoria and Cape Town, and online across South Africa.
We have taught IEB students from schools across the country. They include St Stithians and Roedean School (SA) in Johannesburg; St Alban’s College in Pretoria; Reddam House Constantia and Herschel Girls’ School in Cape Town; Hilton College and Michaelhouse in KwaZulu-Natal; and Kingswood College in Makhanda.
What IEB exams ask of students
The Independent Examinations Board (IEB) is an assessment body accredited by Umalusi to conduct National Senior Certificate examinations. Its Grade 12 examinations are based on CAPS, the South African national curriculum. For 2026, the IEB reports 260-plus registered NSC schools and 17,000-plus registered learners.
The difference is clearest in the papers. In our experience, IEB questions often ask students to use familiar knowledge in unfamiliar contexts, work through several steps and support an answer. A student can understand the content and still drop marks through timing, technique or a misread question. One-to-one tuition gives us room to work on those habits alongside the subject itself. For an IEB programme, we choose a subject tutor who understands the syllabus and uses the relevant past papers and marking guidelines.
The IEB also offers Further Studies Mathematics, English and Physics, formerly called Advanced Programmes. UK Ecctis has benchmarked these courses as comparable to GCE A level. They are designed for Grade 11 and 12 students who want deeper work before university, and we tutor them too. If your family is still weighing curricula, read our detailed comparison of IEB and Cambridge.
IEB subjects we tutor one-on-one
We match each student by subject and stage, from Grade 8 to matric, for lessons at home or online. Based on our work with IEB students, these are some of the areas that often need the closest attention.
Mathematics
The biggest pressure points are multi-step problem solving under time pressure, Paper 2 geometry and trigonometry, and the jump in difficulty in Grade 11. We also support Further Studies Mathematics.
Physical Sciences
Students need to apply theory to unfamiliar experiments and data without losing the method across a multi-step calculation.
English Home Language
We work on clear arguments, unseen poetry and comparative questions on prescribed works.
Afrikaans First Additional Language
Lessons build reading speed and prepare students for the literature paper, with enough written practice to develop confidence.
Life Sciences
Students learn to organise the volume of content and interpret scientific-method questions, rather than rely on recall alone.
Accounting, Business Studies and Economics
We focus on method marks, close reading of case studies and well-structured longer answers.
Our approach
Assess
First, we assess the student to identify gaps in the fundamentals (what content don’t they know?) and common error types (how are they losing marks?).
Match
Then, we select a mentor from our team of IEB tutors. It is crucial for a student to ‘like’ their tutor and look forward to the lessons.
Teach
The trained tutor comes to the house for high-impact one-on-one lessons where they actually teach the ideas and concepts.
Practise
We set structured homework for the student to do in between lessons. When it comes to learning, practice is key.
Engage
We use projects, experiments, and practical demonstrations to excite the student and pique their interest.
Test
The student writes regular mock tests so that they can practise their skills under exam conditions, and we can monitor their progress and increase their confidence.
Refine technique
A student needs to familiarise themselves with the technical requirements of the memorandum in order to excel. We teach test-taking techniques.
Supervise
We supervise, guide and support the programme to ensure a great result.
