APS Calculator

One set of marks, every major South African university at once. Each score is worked out on that university's own published admission point rules, not a generic scale.

Universities do not all count your marks the same way. Some ignore Life Orientation, some cap it, and two of the big ones do not use a 7-point APS at all. The calculator below applies each university's own rules to your marks, so the score you see for Wits is a Wits score and the score you see for UCT is a UCT score. If a result looks different from a number you worked out by hand, the difference is almost always the rules, not the arithmetic.

Enter the registered subjects on your matric report. Most learners have seven; add an eighth or ninth if it appears as a separate registered subject.

For 7 to 9 registered South African NSC or IEB subjects. Further Studies/AP remains separate and is not supported here; Wits may consider it. Your draft is kept in this browser tab and is not sent to Genius.

Your package still needs at least seven subjects and one official language at HL or FAL. Another Group B subject or an approved home language replaces the second official language.

Best six subjects excluding Life Orientation, with 8 points for marks from 90%.

How University of the Witwatersrand works out your score

The best seven subjects include Life Orientation. English and Mathematics receive extra weight from 60%; Life Orientation has its own scale.

This no-programme baseline uses English plus the best five eligible subjects. UCT's actual six also include any subjects required by the programme. Life Orientation is excluded and a mark below 40 contributes zero.
